If you run a dairy operation in Gujarat, Rajasthan, or anywhere in northwestern India, you have almost certainly heard of Alfalfa (Rijka / Lucerne). What fewer farmers fully appreciate is the dramatic difference it can make to your cattle's productivity — and your farm's profitability.
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is rightfully called the "Queen of Fodder." Here is why it stands apart from every other fodder crop grown in India:
Gujarat dairy cooperatives have reported average milk yield increases of 1.5–2.5 litres per cow per day when alfalfa is incorporated as 30–40% of the total fodder ration. At current milk procurement prices, this represents a significant return on the cost of alfalfa seed and cultivation.
Best sowing time: October–November (Rabi season). Alfalfa prefers cool, dry weather for establishment. Avoid the monsoon for sowing as waterlogging is fatal to young seedlings.
Soil: Well-drained loamy to sandy loam. Alfalfa is very sensitive to waterlogging — raised bed or ridge-furrow sowing is recommended in heavier soils.
Irrigation: Drip or furrow irrigation every 10–15 days after establishment. Alfalfa is drought-tolerant once established but yields best with regular moisture.
First cutting: 60–70 days after sowing, when 10% of plants show first flowers. Subsequent cuts every 35–45 days.
Sabar Agro Seeds stocks certified Alfalfa (Rijka) seed — germination-tested, high-purity seed suitable for Gujarat's growing conditions. Available in bulk quantities for large dairy operations.
